Description

These were at home on the CPR mainline between Calgary and Kamloops where they could deal with the gradients but near the end of steam power on the CPR could turn up in Edmonton. The largest of Canadian locomotives, they were too big for the turntable here so had to be turned on the wye. Young Willi Olsen from Minnedosa (or was it Kindersley?) on the tender. Hardly out of school, he worked often as hostler's helper and even occasionally, if memory serves, as hostler. That would involve running even these behemoths around the shop tracks for water, sand, oil, etc. It was a job that led traditionally to the position of fireman (I don't expect there were any 'firepersons' at this time) and eventually engineman. Teenagers were trusted by a lot of the older railroaders many of whom had probably started their own railroad careers at a young age.

This was taken in the summer of 1957. It must have been one of the last appearances in Edmonton of a 5900.
