Despite what many will say, the default address is not 3 (three).
From the NMRA Standards:
- S-9.2.2
- The default value for this Configuration Variable is 3, if the decoder is not installed in a locomotive or other unit when shipped from the manufacturer.
Therefore, the default address of three is applicable only to decoders purchased from a hobby shop.
Locomotives purchased with a multifunction decoder installed may have their default address set to any valid value. The same applies to those installed or programmed by the dealer/installer.
